This story has been updated to reflect the Food and Drug Administration’s decision to allow the generic version of Propecia® to enter the U. S. market. This is the first time the brand-name version of Propecia® has been available over the counter without a prescription.
The FDA approved Propecia® (finasteride) in 1992 for the treatment of male pattern baldness and benign prostatic hyperplasia. In 2007, the FDA issued a final warning about finasteride, the generic version of the drug’s active ingredient, finasteride. The agency’s decision to allow the generic version of Propecia® to enter the U. market is the latest example of a lengthy and potentially dangerous FDA-imposed process that has caused billions of dollars in potential harm to consumers.
In April 2013, the FDA issued a warning letter to two states, New Jersey and Virginia, that they will require a generic version of Propecia® (finasteride) to be marketed in the U. under the name Proscar®, which was approved for the treatment of male pattern baldness and benign prostatic hyperplasia in 1992. The FDA also issued a warning letter to Merck, the drug’s manufacturer. Merck voluntarily changed its name to Propecia® when the original version was not available.
The FDA is also considering the issue of a new warning letter to treat finasteride-resistant prostate cancer, a possible side effect that has been widely recognized as a problem in some cases. However, the FDA is still requiring manufacturers to follow the new warning letter’s directions and discontinue the drug without delay, which is the last FDA-imposed step for a new warning letter to address finasteride-resistant prostate cancer. FDA officials have not issued a new warning letter.
The FDA’s decision to allow the generic version of Propecia® to enter the U. market, which is a different treatment option for the same disease, was one of several recent actions by the FDA in the years following the agency’s release of the warning letter. The FDA has issued a voluntary warning letter to Merck, the drug’s manufacturer, after reports of severe and fatal side effects associated with the drug’s use.
The FDA has also issued a similar voluntary warning letter to the makers of the original Propecia®. The FDA said the warning letter is “designed to inform consumers of the potential risks associated with the use of finasteride,” but did not specify whether the warning letter applies to the original Propecia® or its generic version. The agency has not issued a new warning letter to Merck. Merck, which was the drug’s manufacturer, voluntarily changed its name to Propecia® when the original version was not available.
The FDA has also issued a warning letter to two states, New York and Texas, that it will require generic versions of the drug’s active ingredient, finasteride, to be sold in the U. under the name Proscar® (finasteride). The agency has also issued a letter to Merck to advise consumers that generic finasteride is not interchangeable with the original version.
